Gallery III

These weavings are the foundation of my current series. I wove them from images I had gathered and redesigned over the years. I wasn’t thinking much about what they meant or where they would take me. I knew that I wanted to work with this weave structure and creating these pieces helped me to refine my technique and learn how the colors and pattern interacted. My present design process happened organically when I had a group of drawings on tracing paper laid out on the floor. When some overlapped, they became more expressive and dynamic. This has become the process I use. I have no preconceived idea when I start a piece. I just draw faces and tribal images that I like. When I have enough, I lay all the faces out on the floor in a row and all the tribal images in another row. Then I just see which ones ‘talk’ to each other. Sometimes it’s not a very pleasant conversation. These are the ones I find the most compelling.
